Notes from chat between Lilian Moore and Cassandra Cook on Friday 25/9/09 Taken by Cassandra Cook
Need a lesson plan template. Can refer to that which was used in Teacher as a Planner Unit.
Decide on student cohort – grade 3-4.
Decide on topic and/or focus question/s.
We decided on packaging and its effects on the environment as it is relevant to students day to day.
Focus Questions: Packaging impacts on our environment. How does packaging impact on our environment? How or in what ways can we reduce these impacts?
Possible Cross Curricula Areas to be covered: Science; ICT; Literacy; Maths; Civics and Citizenship.
Plan sequence of 4 lessons. These should cover researching information, collating and supporting information and applying and presenting information possibly by way of a power point presentation, word cloud or wiki.
A wiki could be used for sharing information, ideas and ways to present that information as well as for reflection.
Evaluation or collaborative work may form part of the criteria.
Let students research, weed out information and offer a variety of ways that information can be presented.Let students choose their method of communicating information.
Possible lesson sequence as follows:
Lesson 1: Tuning in This lesson may look at investigating types of packaging e.g.: paper, plastic, polystyrene, reusable containers, and how these types of packaging effect the environment e.g.: are they reusable, recyclable or waste. Results of packaging types may be collated in a graph form using excel or the like covering the Maths area of curriculum. Lesson 2 This lesson may investigate ways to reduce, reuse and recycle packaging. It may involve a task that investigates the types of packaging within students’ lunchboxes and how those packaging effect the environment e.g.: are they reusable, recyclable or waste.Again we should provide the students with a variety of ways to present this information. Curriculum areas covered in this lesson include Science, Maths and ICT. Lesson 3 This lesson may look at identifying ways in which students may personally contribute toreducing waste packaging and sustaining the environment. It may involve developing a class or whole school compost or recycling implantation or recommendation. Curriculum areas covered in this lesson include Science and Civics and Citizenship. A learning resource that may be used here is a game from the Learning Federation (which I evaluated in assessment 2) called Why Recycle?http://econtent.thelearningfederation.edu.au/ec/viewing/L32/index.html Lesson 4 Sorry Lil didn’t get anything down for this one I think it was something about sharing and presenting information. Wow I think we have made some great progress.Feel free to make any changes to this document perhaps in a different color font.I may of missed something and think that I have included some other things that we didn’t talk about also.Look forward to chatting again soon.
